Nail Refills & Soak-Offs: How Often You Need Them (Gel-X, Acrylic, Builder Gel)

Most nail enhancements need a refill or soak-off every 3–4 weeks — Gel-X, acrylic, and builder gel all grow out at the same rate as your natural nail, leaving a visible gap at the base that needs to be filled or removed. Here is how often each service needs attention, what happens during a soak-off, and why the products used matter for nail health.
How Often Do You Need a Refill?
| Service | Refill Interval | Removal Method |
|---|---|---|
| Gel-X | 3–4 weeks | Soak-off (acetone) |
| Acrylic | 2–3 weeks | Soak-off or gentle filing |
| Builder gel | 3–4 weeks | Soak-off or gentle filing |
| Gel manicure (no extension) | 2–3 weeks | Soak-off (acetone) |
Intervals are approximate and depend on your natural nail growth rate. Book your refill appointment →
What Happens During a Soak-Off?
During a soak-off, your technician wraps each nail in an acetone-soaked wrap or has you soak your fingertips directly, which softens the gel or acrylic so it can be gently removed without aggressive scraping or filing. This is the safest removal method for your natural nail — picking, peeling, or forcing off product yourself can strip layers of the natural nail underneath and lead to thinning or damage.

What Is Monomer, and Why Does It Matter?
Monomer is the liquid used to activate acrylic powder during application. Not all monomers are created equal — professional salons use EMA-based monomer, which is the safe, TDLR-compliant standard, while MMA-based monomer (banned for nail use in many contexts due to brittleness and allergic reaction risk) is sometimes used by unlicensed or budget operators to cut costs. If your acrylics feel unusually hard to remove or cause burning during application, that can be a sign of MMA use.
At Iconix Nail Bar, all acrylic services use professional-grade EMA monomer, applied by technicians licensed under the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), which sets statewide standards for product safety and application.
"I used to go to a cheaper place and my nails would feel almost numb during application — turns out that's not normal. Switched to Iconix and the difference in how my nails feel afterward is huge." — Patricia G., Katy

Should You Refill or Remove and Start Fresh?
If your nails are in good condition and you like your current length and shape, a refill is usually the better choice — it's faster and less stressful on the natural nail than full removal and reapplication. If you notice lifting, discoloration under the product, or your nails feel weak after several refill cycles, it's worth doing a full soak-off and giving your natural nails a short break before your next set.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long can you go between nail refills?
Most clients refill every 3–4 weeks for Gel-X and builder gel, or 2–3 weeks for acrylic. Waiting much longer increases the risk of lifting, trapped moisture, and breakage near the gap.
Can I remove gel or acrylic nails myself at home?
It's not recommended. Picking or peeling off product yourself can strip layers of your natural nail. A professional soak-off is the safest removal method.
Is monomer safe to use on nails?
Professional-grade EMA monomer, used by licensed technicians, is considered safe for nail application. MMA-based monomer, sometimes used to cut costs at unlicensed operators, carries a higher risk of brittleness and allergic reaction and is not the professional standard.
